Lori Arnold - Teacher Feature February 2021

Lori Arnold

After 28 years teaching in Sherrard schools, Lori Arnold had this to say when asked why Sherrard, “I don't ask why Sherrard - I ask why not? It's a great community and district. I can make more money by teaching in Moline or Rock Island but there's something about rural schools. Everyone knows everyone and it's a family atmosphere. Everyone has your back.”

Arnold is a high school business teacher and ICOE coordinator. She has an Associates Degree in Accounting, Bachelors of Arts in Business Education and Masters Degree in Educational Research.

Her and husband Tony have a maltese shitzu named Aspen.  She claims three illinois towns as her hometown, “I was born in Roodhouse. In 1977 we moved to Lena, Illinois (not to be confused with Galena) and in 1982 moved to Elmwood. So I consider all these towns my hometown.”

Arnold’s favorites include:
Animal: Dolphin. A few years ago my personal finance class bought me a blue beta fish that they named Phin. He was our class pet.
Color: blue
Food: pizza, spaghetti, and tacos
Book: Peter Pan
Movie:  Mamma Mia and Mamma Mia Here we Go Again
Vacation place: woods camping or Barbados

When she’s not teaching she’s hanging with her family, knitting, reading or camping. Her favorite part of being a teacher is, “Seeing the lightbulb go off when a student finally figures it out. Being with kids keeps me feeling young.”

Something unusual about Arnold, “I am learning to play the bagpipes and I lived in Barbados for 9 months as a 4-H IFYE Exchange... I'm left handed,” she said.

Her best advice for life is, "Dance like nobody's watching; love like you've never been hurt. Sing like nobody's listening; live like it's heaven on earth." -Mark Twain.
