Winola 3rd Grade Students Recognized by Washington

Cleanup Crew

"I was so impressed to read about your recess project. You are showing amazing leadership skills and appreciation for your school by helping to make the playground a more beautiful and enjoyable place for yourself and your classmates," Rep. Cheri Bustos, 17th District, Illinois.

Students at Winola Elementary received a letter from Congresswoman Bustos recognizing third graders for taking the initiative to clean up their playground. In April, near Earth Day - the kids set about picking up trash that had collected around the Winola Elementary playground. They gathered over five gallons of trash consisting of old masks, grocery sacks, and other miscellaneous items.

"They were so proud of their hard work and the playground looks amazing," said Winola PE Teacher Bev Krueger. She said it was entirely their own idea to form a "clean-up crew".

Bustos ended the letter with, "You make our community proud."
