The Sherrard Student Cultural Exchange Club walked in the Mexican Independence Day Parade of East Moline, held on Sept. 19. 🤩

Club sponsor, high school Spanish teacher Ana Lopez said, “This celebration of hispanic heritage is a great experience for the students. Our SCEC Club (Student Cultural Exchange) was able to both participate in the parade and was able to watch all of the performances.”

She said SCEC has been invited to participate the last few years, but this is the first time scheduling worked out for club members.

The event showcased a ranged from traditional Mariachi singers, traditional folkloric dancers and many local bands.

“The opportunity allowed students to experience hispanic culture, food and traditions included, in a more real and personal way. We want to thank the LULAC foundation from Moline, Mrs. Juanita Zertuche, and all organizing members of the Mexican Independence Parade for inviting us to participate and for making this opportunity possible,” said Lopez.

The Mexican holiday, The Grito de Dolores, or El Grito, (the Cry for independence) is celebrated every year on the night between Sep. 15 and 16. It’s the night when all citizens of Mexico celebrate their independence from the Spanish conquerors.
